'The Art Of Game Design' by Jesse Schell is also a great book on game design if you're looking for any more to read.
Thanks a ton. I think I’m good on books for a little while but I’ll keep it in mind next time I’m ordering some. I really do need to flesh out my programming/design library as it’s a tad lacking currently.
As a side note… I’m completely obsessed with Raph Koster now. He’s one of the minds behind some of the greatest MMO’s of all time such as Ultima Online and Star Wars Galaxies. His blog can be found here and it’s… awesome.
“When gays get so angry about a chicken sandwich, it is because Chick-fil-A has given around $5 million to fight to discriminate against us. When we praise brave Eagle Scouts who give up their badges in protest of the Boy Scouts of America’s prejudice, it’s not about scoring political points; it’s because there are kids in dens who are being taught to believe that they are less than equal. When we rant about the pastor who preaches that gays should be thrown into a concentration camp, we scream out of fear. And our fears are justified — in the last seven days, a lesbian in Nebraska was carved with a knife, a gay man in Oklahoma was firebombed, and a girl in Kentucky was kicked and beaten — her jaw broken and her teeth knocked out — while her assailants allegedly hurled anti-gay slurs at her.”—Conor Gaughan - “We Are Not Arguing Over Chicken” (Huffington Post)
After discovering that Raph Koster had written a book about game design, I was fascinated. I can’t say I’ve spent much time following him as a developer but my opinions have been fundamentally shaped by his work on star wars galaxies. Since joining in the emulator testing, I came across a blog post he wrote about game design which completely reversed much of my opinions and streamlined how I viewed the interaction between gameplay, player convenience and the scope of your game. An entire book by him sounds fantastic!
Then I ran into the classic pitfall of Amazon book ordering.. I looked at some of their other options and came across something titled The Philosophy Of Computer Games. Ok… I may have majored in philosophy for two years before going into programming to pursue my interests in game/program design so this sounds fantastic. Then I remembered one of the many reason I left philosophy.
The book is 200 dollars…
GG amazon, gg.
<note> It’s currently available for 140 but you get my point! Stupid enticing titles!
I’ve recently been playing a large amount of the SWG Emulator and it’s something I really find inspiring from a programming standpoint. It reminds me every time I play just how dumbed down new games are and it’s even more saddening when you consider that a large amount of the ‘future ideas’ and suggestions for the emulator consist of dumbing it down to match up with what players now simply expect from a game. There’s a very interesting article here posted by one of the swg developers which really brings up some compelling points.
"Every inconvenience is a challenge, and games are made of challenges. This means that every inconvenience in your design is potentially someone’s game."
Oh great. Now all I can see is Morello delicately working his fingers through Zyra’s vines… brushing aside her foliage with gentle yet decisive movements… gazing into her eyes as he carefully inspects the ripeness of her seedpods… and Zyra returns his ministrations by wrapping her vines around his rugged, yet yielding, form, tracing the curve of his biceps with a soft flowering tendril…
I’m reblogging this mostly for the awesome use of the Robin gif.
And Harper’s a total fuck-wad of a Right-winger. Wow. I’m impressed.
Well…from what I’ve read, they’re banned from broadcasting in Canada, but they can still be carried on private cable networks, which is how they currently operate in the US.
To me this is just one more example of the CRTC doing whatever various interest groups ask of them…
Prime example? Allowing Bell to effectively change the laws governing internet bandwidth so that they could eliminate whatever small competition had escaped their monopoly and allow them to continue denying reasonably upgraded infrastructure to Canadians. Thankfully there was enough backlash in that example that the ruling was reversed before the charges took effect. Hell, bell is just now starting to allow resellers to provide dsl-2 in Ontario and from what I remember, that took a number of legal battles.
It’s just the CRTC allowing interest groups to determine their rulings. Then as soon as the public gets outraged over these incredibly dumb decisions, the CRTC just says “well we didn’t wanna do it anyways!” and changes the ruling.
So I decided to do a blitz support round before heading to bed… our team kept making very dumb decisions so I (calmly) offered some advice. We ended up stomping thanks to our top lane doing reasonably well, my grabs and my ADC having a brain (lets face it… as long as you can keep them alive they just need to right click something and you win the game).
After the round, we exchanged some hi-5’s in the post game screen where our jungler said “GG Blitz. You’re a real douchebag though”. Ok, I assumed this was cause I had been offering a bunch of advice early/mid game but according to him my advice was good, I played well and wasn’t rude.. yet somehow was a giant douchebag?
I shall now question my self worth for the rest of the evening. Scumbag WW. xD
Seriously though… I don’t quite get it. He never really elaborated and was very clear it wasn’t what I was saying or how I was playing… So random! :P
i’m just waiting for the first party of the semester when all the freshmen on the team are slops by like 10:00. then, we can put the children to bed and the adults can get down to partying.
I always found this hilarious when I was in rez… All those idiots who couldn’t hold their liqueur and never learned. “ooh, it’s 10 and you’re wasted and throwing up? I’m pleasantly buzzed and will be more than happy to party for the next 5-6 hours still so yahh… just go pass out already”
“So avoid using the word ‘very’ because it’s lazy. A man is not very tired, he is exhausted. Don’t use very sad, use morose. Language was invented for one reason, boys - to woo women - and, in that endeavor, laziness will not do.”—Dead Poets Society (via strayinsiberia)
